Fashion week, Rachel Comey, here we come!!!

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Fashion Week officially kicks off tomorrow, and Arlene and I are lucky enough to be there. We’ll be heading out to NYC on Thursday morning (Arlene’s 9-year old daughter, Kit, in tow. Can’t even begin to tell you how excited she is. She started crying the minute Arlene told her — started saying it was going to be “just like the day we went searching for Rodarte for Target!” She LOVES to hang out at our studio — playing dress-up, waiting on imaginary customers — and she loves fashion. Oh, and she really, really wants to have her picture on our blog. She is a serious fashionista-in-training.)

Anyway, while we were able to set up a few appointments for Thursday and Friday (Sonia Rykiel inlcuded, we’re happy to announce!!!), the main reason for this trip is the Rachel Comey show. We just adore Rachel Comey’s easy, quirky, yet feminine style and are super-excited to be adding her to our shop this Spring. Can’t wait to see what she’s got on deck for Fall. Here’s a quick look back at Fall 09.

Love her knits, her furs, her prints, her layers, her shoes. Just love everything about her whole vibe. So easy and so cool, right? We’ll definitely give an update upon our return. And maybe even include a picture or two of Kit.

Such a Teese

Monday, February 8th, 2010

As we have established, I am a big, big fan of old Hollywood and all that sort of Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis sort of glamour. So, one of my most favorite modern celebrities is the gorgeous Dita Von Teese. I’m not going to lie, once I saw those eyebrows I was hooked. If there is an aesthitician in the world who can make my eyebrows look like that (without surgery), I need her (or his) number!!

Recently, I stumbled across these images of the stunning Dita wearing Gaultier.

That last one kinda reminds me of this movie still of Bette Davis…

C’mon, she looks fantastic, doesn’t she?? Love the black and white photography. And the menswear look just kills me — I need that strappy, corset-y thing. Perfect.

Saint Valentines + J.Lingnau

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I could not find a better pairing than Saint Valentines + J.Lingnau.  Such an in-your-face-full-of-love gift, I can’t stand it!  Rings, hearts & arrows, yours (or his) initial and a big beautiful diamond.

many thanks to Loeffler Randall for the inspiration!

Let’s get Sophomoric

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Let’s face it, there’s really not much more that Arlene and I love than easy fashion. Pieces that can be easily worked into your wardrobe, basics with an edge, things we can easily layer, dress up, dress down. That’s us in a nutshell. When we discovered Chrissie Miller’s line, Sophomore, last Spring, we knew we had stumbled upon something pretty great — something that would transition seamlessly both into our individual wardrobes and into our shop. Sophomore celebrates downtown New York, rebel without a cause, bad-ass easy style. Chrissie Miller and designer Madeline von Froomer know that easy, effortless dressing never goes out of style.

“Lower East Side style of the ’70s and Lower East Side style of today look almost the same — people never stray from the basics.”

“In a one-dimensional world of basics, SOPHOMORE brings a fashion twist, soft washed fabrics, perfect fits and a New York vibe that will make the line a clothing staple for years to come.”

True to the label’s sensibility, Chrissie does things her way. With friend and frequent collaborator Cass Bird, Miller presented her Spring10 line in an entirely new way — as a short film that premiered at Sundance. The film features a  bunch of New York hipsters talking about getting arrested, busted, grounded and generally thumbing their noses at authority. Filmed on the boardwalk at Coney Island and complete with fashion, fireworks and beer, she’s created quite an innovative way to showcase her wares.

Pieces from the film will be available in our shop later this month. In the meantime, it’s not too late to grab some of the looks from her Fall09 collection.
