Personal diary: a little more NYC

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Every time Fashion Week and Market week roll around, Arlene and I take a different attack. Our NY schedule is always dictated by the Rachel Comey show. (In case it’s not overwhelmingly evident, we are kind of obsessed with all things Comey.) This time around the Comey show was actually the day before Fashion Week. So we went in for that, stayed for 2 days, and then went back 2 weeks later for 1 night/2 days.

Here’s some more snaps from our trip. We always have the best time…

The music at Comey was AH MAY ZING — these 2 female drummers who call themselves “IUD.” Rachel is just so cool. And the internet celebz know it, too…

Arlene and I joke that what we really look forward to the most is the food, and the fashion is just the icing on top. Our latest food discovery is the super-delicious and adorable Peels (on Bowery, right across the street from Rogan — GO!)

There’s always so much to do and see in NYC, I can’t wait until next time!

Back to the Fashion: Fashion Week(end) at Milk Studios

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Since we decided to forgo Market week and do Fashion Week instead, we (of course!) were all about the parties and the shows. One of the biggest treats was being invited to Milk Studios 2 nights in a row. LOTS of celeb sightings there!

We also ran into Susie Bubble (who we/I had accosted 3 nights earlier outside the Chelsea Piers), Sam Shipley and Rogan Gregory (sooo hot!) I admittedly felt a little like an adolescent school girl at a Justin Bieber concert… But more important than my silly, little “celebrity” sightings was the fashion.

This isn’t the first time we’ve said this, but we’re OBSESSED with Gary Graham. His talent leaves me breathless. You should have seen his inspiration board at the showroom. It was so thoroughly realized that it was 3D!! We’ll post pics of that later. SO much more to recap… stay tuned!

Favorite Moment #101, fashion week 2010

Monday, September 20th, 2010

There are lots & lots of favorite moments from fashion week.  This one is definitely a favorite and I’ve been blessed with this favorite moment a number times.  This time around was extra special because it was NY fashion week!  After an early morning & flight out, nothing perks me up more than walking into a nice hotel and the kind gentleman behind the counter says, “ladies, you have been upgraded to a one bedroom suite.”  Why thank you so much!  We stayed at The Lombardy in midtown midhattan.   Just a fluke that we found this great old hotel.  The suites are also owner occupied so lots of midtown locals (and fashion) were in and out.  The upgrade was more than just twice as much space.  The art filled suite was so nice to come home to during the madness of fashion week.

My husband’s sneaks and my beloved Hipstamatic

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

We just got back from a whirlwind trip to NYC for Fashion Week. We NEVER go to Fashion Week and there is an awful lot to recap. So while we sort through our pictures and all that we have to share, I thought I would do a quick post about my hubs and my iPhone.

I have been a Blackberry user for a number of years and just finally went to the iPhone. I am not completely in love with it but what I am in love with is my Hipstamatic app. A-MAZ-ING.

My husband, Tracy, looked super-cute today in khakis, a stripe button-up and the cutest sneaks from Cole Haan. He’s not so hot on me taking his picture for the blog (and this isn’t really a blog about men’s fashion), so I put on his cute sneaks and took a few shots with the Hipstamatic.

And for a taste of Fash Week, here’s a few Hipstamatic shots from our trip…

As our Fall shipments are beginning to arrive, I’ve been looking back at Fall shows. So much goodness everywhere. Knits, outerwear, and pants, pants, pants. I just can’t wait. It’s definitely my favorite time of year for dressing. But then, isn’t it everyone’s?

When I started surfing, I got totally sidetracked by Ann D. Just, wow. I’m speechless. I. Want. Everything.

Fashion week, Rachel Comey, here we come!!!

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Fashion Week officially kicks off tomorrow, and Arlene and I are lucky enough to be there. We’ll be heading out to NYC on Thursday morning (Arlene’s 9-year old daughter, Kit, in tow. Can’t even begin to tell you how excited she is. She started crying the minute Arlene told her — started saying it was going to be “just like the day we went searching for Rodarte for Target!” She LOVES to hang out at our studio — playing dress-up, waiting on imaginary customers — and she loves fashion. Oh, and she really, really wants to have her picture on our blog. She is a serious fashionista-in-training.)

Anyway, while we were able to set up a few appointments for Thursday and Friday (Sonia Rykiel inlcuded, we’re happy to announce!!!), the main reason for this trip is the Rachel Comey show. We just adore Rachel Comey’s easy, quirky, yet feminine style and are super-excited to be adding her to our shop this Spring. Can’t wait to see what she’s got on deck for Fall. Here’s a quick look back at Fall 09.

Love her knits, her furs, her prints, her layers, her shoes. Just love everything about her whole vibe. So easy and so cool, right? We’ll definitely give an update upon our return. And maybe even include a picture or two of Kit.

Rodarte, you set my heart on FIRE.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Every season Kate and Laura Mulleavy blow me away with their insane creativity. I don’t like to blog very much about Fashion Week while it’s happening because I figure all of you are up on the latest buzz, have seen all the shows, and have formed your own opinions. But Arlene and I do always feel compelled to comment on the shows and designers that move us. To this end I always find myself posting about Rodarte.

When the very first Rodarte collection hit stores, Arlene and I were working for a boutique that had bought 3 dresses from the line. I remember the day the box arrived (it’s always a little bit like Christmas or your birthday when UPS drops off a box of new merchandise!) and I remember — very vividly — all of us oohing and aahing over the 3 pieces that emerged: 3 silk dresses, one in black, one in a peacock blue, and one in a sort of pumpkin hue, all hand-adorned with feathers.

The fabric, the design, and the workmanship were obvious from the beginning. These are 2 women who are not afraid to take a risk and put themselves out there and I, for one, am SO glad that they just keep doing what they do — feminine and sexy with a major rock-and-roll edge.

And can we talk about that styling??? When they found their inspiration in the California wildfires, they just went ALL. THE. WAY. The smoke, the slicked back hair, the vamp lips and nails, the tribal tattoos… hot, hot, HOT (no pun intended :-))

More great shows out of NY these last couple of days…Elise Overland,Derek Lam, CFDA Fashion Fund award finalist, Ohne Titel and a recent favorite for us, Jeremy Laing.  His slighlty avant garde silhouettes, the mix of soft neutral colors and the luscious layering gets us all the time :)
