Outfit inspiration: maxis

Monday, January 16th, 2012

It’s that time of year again — Fashion Week is just around the corner. I’m gonna need to look awesome [obvs], so I’ve been surfing like a mad woman for inspiration.

When it comes to traveling, I always try to think about comfort and versatility. As much as I would love to be rockin’ heels all over NYC, it just isn’t a reality for me. I do not feel sexy when I’m not wearing heels — especially during Fashion Week — so I’ve got to think about ways that I can feel stylish and attractive, yet still be comfortable. (Something else I’ll tell you is that when my feet hurt, it is all over. I am no fun, I am uninspired, and I’m a royal pain in the ass. Just ask Arlene — she’s known me for years and has seen me through many a my-feet-are-killing-me-I-have-to-sit-down-get-me-the-hell-out-of-here moments. Not fun.)

So, I’m turning to the maxi. Be it dress or skirt, it’s the perfect solution.

A great cashmere maxi dress…

…is like a blank canvas. Layer it, wear some awesome flats, and look awesome!

And a great maxi skirt (my recently acquired vintage skirt looks a lot like this, but with a center panel of chiffon)…

…can be perfect this time of year. With a chunky sweater, a blazer or motorcycle jacket, it’s the epitome of effortless chic.

Now I just have to pray for good weather. Snow (or rain) and maxi anything definitely don’t mix.

Thanksgiving the Rachel Comey way

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Today I am off to Atlanta for Thanksgiving. 3 days and nights that will entail cooking, hosting, being a guest, a possible trip to the country club, and shopping, of course (Hello, Black Friday!) I am a notorious over-packer trying to turn over a new leaf, so for versatility and longevity I turned to our favorite, Rachel Comey.

My whole weekend wardrobe is based around these 2 dresses (the Candela and the Wimberley):

WIth a couple of packing-friendly basics — tees, leggings, skinny jeans — an appropriate piece of outerwear (I’ll be taking my leather biker jacket), and a thoughtful assortment of shoes, I am good to go.

Man, that was surprisingly easy!

Happy turkey day everyone!

Seeing things clearly

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Over the weekend I attended the Randolph Street Holiday Market. While there, I met the cutest woman who was wearing these awesome cat-eye frames.

I assumed them to be vintage (as most things at the Randolph Market are), but when I asked her about them, she told me they were a Parisian line called Face À Face. Well, as a glasses wearer who can’t quite get the hang of contacts, I am always interested in finding a cool new pair. So I ran right home and googled them.

Many fab styles to choose from. Cat eyes, updated classics, and shapes I’ve never even thought of. Love.

Glasses — they’re the perfect accessory!

Boy crush

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

As completely boy crazy as I am, I don’t really talk about men too much on the blog. We don’t sell men’s clothes and, to be perfectly honest, I don’t really notice that much what men are wearing (or what the trends are in menswear, anyway). Well this coming weekend, Arlene and I will be styling 3 men — triplets. The first thought that came to both of us was, what the hell do men even wear these days?? I’m still not sure, but all of these guys seem to have it goin’ on…

What I love most about all of these shots is that these guys are all really expressing their personalities through their clothing and accessories. Men don’t have all the fun options that us ladies have, so kudos to them for finding a way to make these looks their own. Thanks for the inspiration, guys!

Girl Friday: Eva Fontanelli

Friday, July 1st, 2011

This week’s Girl Friday is Italian editor and stylist, Eva Fontanelli.  She’s been catching my eye for awhile now. Quirky and original with an affinity for the oversized, her style is right up my alley. I love her hair, I love her smile, I love her gigantic pants and all of her maxis. She’s younger than me and can certainly pull off things that I can’t, but she is definitely my muse of the moment.

Love seeing her in this skirt twice.

Seriously, how cute is she?

The denim shirt makes a comeback…

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

And I am on the bandwagon.

My memories of the denim shirt revolve mainly around my obsession with Jim Morrison in the early 80s.

Damn, he's hot.

The denim shirt (and my personal style) have evolved quite a bit since then and now the denim shirt seems to be a staple in any fashionable girl’s wardrobe.

With denim, leather, skirts, pants, or even a bathing suit, the denim shirt is my new go-to. And this one from Surface To Air is the one I’m rocking all summer long. Long live the denim shirt!

How to wear the LBD

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Holiday parties are in abundance right now, Christmas is less than a week away, and New year’s eve is right around the corner, so your LBD is probably getting a lot of play right now. Whether you’ve already been putting yours through its paces or have yet to pick out the perfect one for NYE, you’re likely wishing that your special occasion LBD could come out of hiding more than a handful of times a year. Well we’ve certainly thought about it, so we decided to get down to business and feature the little black dress as our December Style It. It really is a versatile little thing to have in your closet, so don’t be afraid to have some fun and bust it out all year!

shop the story here.

Amen to that!! Ted ideas worth spreading

Came across this wonderful video from The Bedlam of Beefy and thought it would be a great way to start the week….with some laughs & inspiration.  Enjoy!

Such a Teese

Monday, February 8th, 2010

As we have established, I am a big, big fan of old Hollywood and all that sort of Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis sort of glamour. So, one of my most favorite modern celebrities is the gorgeous Dita Von Teese. I’m not going to lie, once I saw those eyebrows I was hooked. If there is an aesthitician in the world who can make my eyebrows look like that (without surgery), I need her (or his) number!!

Recently, I stumbled across these images of the stunning Dita wearing Gaultier.

That last one kinda reminds me of this movie still of Bette Davis…

C’mon, she looks fantastic, doesn’t she?? Love the black and white photography. And the menswear look just kills me — I need that strappy, corset-y thing. Perfect.

Yasmin Sewell, creative consultant

Monday, January 18th, 2010

A woman we admire for her incredible talents in the fashion industry (her boutique, Yasmin Cho was voted one of the top five most influential three times over, was the buying director at Browns and is the creative consultant for Liberty), her fantastic personal style (love her understated-and-yet-always-makes-a-statement style) and of course, her gorgeous hair….hair that I just dream about.
