The turban finally got me.

Monday, March 28th, 2011

I can’t believe it, but I’m finally ready to embrace the turban. Seriously. Although the turban officially started its comeback with Prada’s Spring 07 show, I don’t really feel all that far behind. I mean let’s face it, it isn’t exactly the easiest thing to pull off. There are women who seem to do it with ease, though, and I’m taking my cue from them and their fearlessness.

I’ve been obsessing about them for a while now. When I saw these adorable ones from Yestadt’s S11 collection, I started to think that I could actually wear a turban. Add in the fact that (due to some serious miscommunication with my hairstylist) I am currently sporting something akin to a mullet, now is definitely the time to try it out. Seeing how Hubs lost his job and I’m a struggling entrepreneur, I had to get creative. I have about a gazillion scarves, so here’s my attempt at a turban tie.

I’m also in love with the super-easy to do and wear “turband.” Expect to be seeing me sporting this look a lot as my hair grows out ;).

Fun with tights!

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

As I was surfing for inspiration for our upcoming cover story shoot, I came across these awesome tights from bebaroque out of Scotland. We are always looking for cool tights and socks. Such an easy way to personalize an outfit and add a little punch to that basic LBD. I don’t know why, but they’re always so hard to find! Well with tights like these, I think we would always have the perfect pair for any and every outfit. And definitely for any photo shoot that comes our way.

Love the styling of this shot. Polka dots with polka dots -- yes!

Leave it the UK fashionistas to already be on this!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s time for me to go do some shopping!

Mixing it up

Friday, March 18th, 2011

We just shot our latest Style It feature for the site — a printed silk pant. I didn’t really think about it as some sort of print mixing challenge, but print mixing definitely came into the… well, mix.

We have a rack right by our desks where we keep the things we’re currently working with. Our printed silk pant was hanging in the front, and peeking out from the rack of items behind was this pink paisley print blouse. They instantly looked so cute together!

It got me thinking about all the confusion around this whole print mixing thing. And you know what? It shouldn’t be that daunting. In fact, it’s actually kind of fun.

The socks? Nice.

Tip from Garance: if you want to get snapped by a streetstyle photog, "have a phone, of course!"

My favorite. Masterful.

Apparently there are “rules” (like stay in the same — or a complementary — color family), but it’s really just a chance to have some fun with good, old-fashioned trial and error. So if you haven’t yet, try it. Whatever the fabric and whatever the season, it’s always a good time to unleash your inner-kindergartner and mix it up a little.

Hey, I like your streetstyle

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Hands down, the streetstyle blogs are my drug choice in the blogosphere.  They inspire me to peel off my jammies and try some different things with my wardrobe.  Oh happy day to learn of another {incredible} streetstyle blog, STREETFSN.  HB Nam, the genius behind the lens, has one sharp eye and one quick shutter!  LOVE that his subjects are much less posed, but instead on the move, on their phones or just hanging and chatting.  One huge THANK YOU to Stefanie over at YES PLEASE MADEMOISELLE for sharing STREETFSN on her blog yesterday.  As I commented to her, “I could not get enough!”….so here’s a plethora of inspiration, enjoy!  And go checkout STREETFSN!

Grey

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Maybe it’s just being in the middle of a Chicago winter — or the fact that my husband just lost his job — but I’m really feeling grey lately.

Chocolate part deux: my obsession with brown & black

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Started packing for Fashion Week last night. Could go on for hours about that whole process, but I won’t (unless you beg me to). As I was planning my outfits (a must!), I was also thinking about outerwear. My outerwear has to keep me warm, but it can’t be too bulky. I’ll be in and out of showrooms and studios and shows, much of the time having to either stand holding my coat or continue wearing it. A challenge, let me tell you. One of the coats I really want to take is my Rachel Comey Second Husband coat.

Since it’s camel and most of my leg coverings (and hat and gloves) are black, I started surfing brown and black. What a delicious combination.

All black with a brown shoe at Margiela. Love that.

This is a cheat, but how you can resist that gorgeous brown braid with that adorable black head wrap?

Gimme those 70s jeans!

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Okay I admit it. I want some high-waisted wide leg 1970s-inspired jeans. And I want ‘em BAD. I wasn’t really old enough to rock them back in the 70s, but I am plenty old enough now! Arlene has a See by Chloe pair that she’s had for years and I’ve always been jealous. I’m so happy to be seeing them pop up, hoping this means that I can finally find the perfect pair for my pear :)
